NOVEMBER 2018 54 917/30 Chassis 003 on-track demonstration. Bruce Canepa descending from the Corkscrew. Donohue's primary car in the 1973 Can-Am. The Penske team won the championship for a second year and Porsche's domination of the Can-Am led to rule changes that effectively made the cars obsolete. In 1975, this car set a closed-course speed record at Talladega (221 mph). It was then sold to Otis Chandler, publisher of the LA Times, who owned our local Gulf 917 at the same time. At Rennsport, 003 won Best of Show in the Concours for current owner, Rob Kauffman. Chassis 004 was on hand as well, now repainted in plain white. This car was being built as Donohue's primary car for the 1974 Can-Am season when the rules were changed. It appeared in Sunoco colors for many years, including during the ownership of Jerry Seinfeld. The current owner has returned it to the 'delivery' white look. 917/30 Chassis 004 during Can-Am demonstration laps. The opportunity to see a single 917 is special, so visiting with 11 of them in one place is pretty amazing and would only happen at a Rennsport Reunion (unless we are successful in getting the 917s invited to Pebble Beach). Having said that, Rennsport also presented other amazing groups of cars like the 550/718, 904, 908, 959, 962, RS Spyders and 918. I hope everyone who attended enjoyed the show as much as I did.
