KEEPING THE PAST ALIVE, LOOKING AND FEELING FRESH Get to know the Berkeley project It's a classic Queen Anne-style home, located in the celebrated Seattle neighborhood of the same name, that recently got a modern makeover thanks to the folks at Pathway Design & Construction and their beautiful renovation and restorative skills Tasked with uncovering the home's original charm and character, Paul Kocharhook and crew added a touch of European flair to the new powder room and updated kitchen, which aligned with the clients' desire to incorporate their love of travel into their permanent residence The home, which also appeared in this year's Remodeled Homes Tour (more about the tour on pages 27-29), deftly blends old with new and throws in a healthy dose of uniqueness and individuality, two traits which have defined the residents of the Northwest and their homes since the Denny Party got down at Alki THE PROCESS On his Queen Anne update, Kocharhook had to ensure the health and integrity of his historic project matched the high expectations homeowners demand in today's market, but it all starts with fixing the mistakes of the past Tell me if that sounds familiar The project takes part in three phases; phase one dealt with mending the "horrendous" remodels that have taken place over the years Phase two was an update of the bathroom and kitchen, the former Kocharhook gave an updated "Queen Anne-type" look, while the latter contains a more modern design due to the demands of today's lifestyle and, well, because modern convenience is great Kocharhook sums up the delicate balance between keeping it classic and applying modernization: "On remodels like (Berkeley), it's about bringing the house back to life and highlighting its original design intent," he says "When we look at a project such as this, we of course see the modern aspects but, at the same time, the last thing we want to do is to take away from the character of the home and neighborhood " 18 master builder WINTER 2018
