driveability, converter efficiency and hot and cold fuel handling and more testing was required. Finally, PCNA announced that the prices of the 911 Carrera 2 and 4 would be increased by 2% (an MSRP of $61,915 from $60,700 for a Carrera 2). 10 Years Ago A whole bunch of early 2001 events were covered in the June Spiel including the annual Cinco de Mayo gathering at the Bellevue Azteca, a write-up from Hayward Seymore covering the Hershey, Pa. swap meet which he attends every year, a Boxster only tech session at Barrier Motors, the "Dead End Tour" which wound around through Snohomish County, the April 21st autocross at Bremerton which was writtenup by that famous author "Otto Krosse", a description of a typical skills day event and Al's tech notes which detailed the events at Zone 1's Tech Tactics, which this year covered 25 years of the Turbo. An article on what to look for when contemplating the purchase of a 911 was included with the first installment covering body inspection and another member offered a story on the purchase of his first Porsche, a '74 911 in which he got a lot less that what he had expected. Steve Ridgeway, Linda Kornacki, Brent Jones, Eric Hanson, Kristin Kappl, Glen Hernandez, Jamie McCuaig, Janet McCuaig, Jason Celestine, Leeds Gulick, Joan Carlson, Dave Said and Jodi Fordahl all won their classes at the above-mentioned autocross and an interesting up-coming event is a possible non-sanctioned tour to Las Vegas organized by a guy with an Alaska E-Mail address. It would take place in mid-October and travel through Yellowstone, Zion Canyon and Monument Valley and return by Area 51 and central Oregon. I wonder if it ever happened. While Hayward's article on the Hershey Swap Meet covered the social aspects of the event (he meets a couple of old buddies there that he has known for ages), Bob Gutjahr furnished an article in Pano that described the event and its origins. Conceived by Dennis Frick as a way to get 356 parts back into circulation, the first meet was held at the local Porsche dealer's in Mechanicsburg, Pa. in conjunction with the Carlisle Swap Meet in 1977. After outgrowing this venue, the event shifted to the Ski Roundtop ski resort in 1982. As the event grew, congestion forced the organizers to search for a more suitable venue, which was offered in 1998 by a local 356 owner who happened to be the CEO of the Hershey Corporation. As of this writing (2001) the Meet attracts over 550 vendors and some 6000 enthusiasts. As Bob describes it, "Shopping and swapping takes place amongst vendors almost immediately, and deals are made with all the subtlety of sharks snapping in an ocean of blood. At 7:30, shoppers pass through the gates, and only the quick and the early obtain the rarest parts".
