Presented by: Ponce, Puerto Rico In 1954, TMT Trailer Ferry - Crowley's predecessor company - launched the first U.S.-flag ocean Roll On/Roll Off (Ro/Ro) containerized service between South Atlantic ports and Puerto Rico when it secured several 20-foot containers aboard the deck of a concrete barge in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and transported them to Ponce, Puerto Rico. Shortly thereafter, the company began using converted war surplus Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs) and seatrucks to serve the trailerized shipping industry. TMT's "floating highway" for Ro/Ro traffic was one of the simplest and most-efficient cargo-transport systems ever developed and continues today as Crowley celebrates its 60th anniversary of service to Puerto Rico in 2014.
