12 A Future Committed to Puerto Rico In 2013, Crowley announced its plans to build the Commitment Class vessels, the world's first LNG-powered ConRo ships. These environmentally friendly ships, which will be named El Coquí (ko-kee) and Taíno (tahy-noh), will offer customers fast ocean transit times, while accommodating the company's diverse equipment selection and cargo handling flexibility — benefits customers have enjoyed over the past 60 years. "Using LNG as fuel, which is cleaner burning, the vessels also represent our commitment to the environment. And, because these ships will be built in the U.S. and crewed by Americans, this investment represents our commitment to the Jones Act and the American maritime industry," Crowley says. El coquí is the common name for several species of small frogs that are native to Puerto Rico, and Taíno were native Puerto Ricans who lived off the land and had great appreciation and respect for their environment. "It also reflects Crowley's commitment to EcoStewardship, in that we are developing and using best-available technology that allows for improved emissions, advanced ballast water management and alternative fuel selection," Crowley added. "This expansion is an important step in our path towards boosting trade and moving the economy," Puerto Rico Governor Alejandro García Padilla said in an interview with Caribbean Business. "Crowley picked the Port of San Juan over others in the Caribbean due to the stability of the local market and its projections for economic growth." The vessel design was brought to life by Wartsila Ship Design, in conjunction with Crowley subsidiary Jensen Maritime, a leading Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering firm. The new double-hulled ConRo ships have been designed to maximize the carriage of 102-inch-wide containers, which offer the most cubic cargo capacity in the trade. Moreover, the ships will meet or exceed all regulatory requirements and have the CLEAN notation, which requires limitation of operational emissions and discharges, as well as the Green Passport, both issued by classification society Det Norske Veritas (DNV). "You don't typically see a Jones Act company investing the type of money Crowley has and continues to do," says Figueroa. "As someone who comes from a family that has worked in the maritime industry for three generations, I consider myself lucky to be a part of that, and am going to whatever I can to be aboard [one of the new vessels] as it arrives in Puerto Rico through San Juan Bay."
