In fact, Crowley dominates the market, moving nearly 40 percent of all southbound and northbound containerized and
rolling stock cargo, such as heavy machinery, building materials, and industrial equipment, annually. As the commonwealth's top
carrier, Crowley plays a pivotal role in the island's economy, transporting roughly half of all products manufactured in Puerto Rico to
the mainland. These products include food, pharmaceuticals, rum and other consumer goods made by the people of Puerto Rico.
"Crowley is a company that helps enrich life for those living
in Puerto Rico," says Enrique Figueroa, director of human
resources and labor relations on the island. "Puerto Rico only
produces about 20 percent of what it consumes; everything else
is imported. And for the past 60 years, people here have relied on
Crowley to bring the essentials, as well as the things that make life
more enjoyable."
In addition to serving as a lifeline between Puerto Rico and the
mainland, Crowley has helped island residents and businesses
during times of need.
In 1994, a major oil spill occurred off the coast of San Juan after
the tank barge Morris J. Berman ran aground. Crowley quickly
stepped in, providing the Coast Guard with its special-purpose,
spill response barge to assist with clean up efforts.
Similarly, Crowley has also served the people of Puerto Rico
after natural disasters. The company is typically the first ocean
carrier to resume service, sometimes even delivering cargo for its
competitors if they've suffered damage to their facilities.
