In 1898, founder Tom Crowley needed to raise cash to pay for new vessels. He
began purchasing unneeded fur garments from whalers returning to California
from Alaska and selling them at a profit to gold prospectors heading north to
the Yukon and the Alaska wilderness. He soon had enough money to purchase
some of the nation's first gas-powered launch boats, which were considered
new technology at the time. And by 1900, he had several gas-powered vessels
in his fleet, including the 45-foot Crowley shown here. Crowley has demonstrated creativity and innovation for more than 100 years, and today the company
continues that tradition with the development of the first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered, combination container and Roll-On/Roll-Off (ConRo) ships in
the world. Designed for service between the U.S. and Puerto Rico, the two new ships will offer optimal performance and safety while setting new standards
for environmentally responsible shipping when deployed in 2017.
