FEBRUARY 2017 WWW.PNWR.ORG 7 Welcome everyone to February. Ordinarily, this time of year rests squarely in the middle of the winter doldrums in terms of Porsche motoring activities. Certainly it's true that many of you still have your cars nestled warm and dry in the garage, awaiting better weather that is more in keeping with the driving tastes of our club members, as well as the manufacturer recommendations for the high performance tires that many of us use. The image I have in my mind is something like one of my favorite Afternoon Highbeams cartoons, which evokes the dreamy texture of a famous old children's bedtime story. Incidentally, this particular cartoon was the inaugural installment of Afternoon Highbeams as a regular feature of the Spiel, which started one year ago this month. Nonetheless, in spite of all the winter imagery and humming trickle chargers, as you leaf through this edition of the Spiel I think you see that looks can be deceiving. As it turns out we have already had our first Driver Skills event in January. Also, the first of our always outstanding Tech Ed events, this one at Gerber Motorsports, has also taken place—more on that later. As for February, we are starting off in high gear with what is shaping up to be another epic Tech Ed event at JFC Racing on the 25th. Why do you need to be there? Just read John Mueller's piece (page 12) and you'll understand. In addition, a bit before that on February 18th, marks the date for the second Driver Skills day of the year. Please look at Ed Jenkins column on the facing page to learn why these events are so special. Still not enough winter action? No problem, because this month the PNWR is also hosting a great social event at the Half Lion Brewery on February 11th (see pages 4, 20) and the autocross crowd will hold their first practice session of the year and awards banquet on the 25th. Speaking of banquets, how could I write this piece without commenting on the PNWR Annual Awards Banquet that just took place in January? Always billed as one of the highlights of the year, this time was no exception. These events require an enormous amount of planning to pull off. I don't think everyone realizes this was the first big assignment of our newly minted Social Chair, Sydney Tanner. Jumping straight into the deep end of the pool, she did a great job. Please look at Ed Jenkins article on the facing page and the Social column (page 20) for more, but let me add my thanks to her and the many other volunteers who made this event such a success. I especially want to thank our many sponsors of this event who generously provided a huge array of door prizes and raffle items supporting the charitable goals of the club. Of huge importance, the majority of these good folks are also regular sponsors of the Spiel. When one speaks of the PNWR it is often said, "It's all about the people". This is certainly true, but it is equally true that it is also all about our generous sponsors. We couldn't do it without them. Specifically, I would like to recognize and thank the following people and organizations (in alphabetical order): FROM THE EDITOR David G.
