MARTIAL ARTS MARTIAL ARTS Shito-Ryu Karate Instructor: Mike Stack Location: Pioneer Center Min 8/Max 16 No class: Nov 20, 22 Karate for Kids Students are challenged to maintain or improve their manners, respect for themselves and others, and self- discipline. Flexibility and strengthening exercises are taught along with tumbling maneuvers. Learn self-defense tactics, awareness, and avoidance of risky situations. Basic karate stances, blocks, punches, and kicks are also covered. Caregivers who wish to train with their child are welcome to register in this class. 6-8 yrs MW ......... Sep 11-Dec 6 ............. 6:45-7:30pm Resident: $72/N-Resident: $74 Beginning Manners, respect, and self-discipline are emphasized in this traditional Japanese martial art program. Kata (forms), introductory tournament sparring, and basic self-defense techniques are covered. Each class includes 20-30 minutes of aerobic, fl exibility, and strength-building exercises. Attire should be loose fi tting and cool, as the class can be moderately strenuous for those not already in good physical condition. Advancement opportunities are available. 9+ yrs MW ......... Sep 11-Dec 6 ............. 7:35-8:35pm Resident: $97/N-Resident: $99 Intermediate This class includes more advanced forms, kobudo, self-defense, and sparring techniques. Class is limited to those with abilities equivalent to Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai blue belt (8th kyu) and above. 9+ yrs MW ......... Sep 11-Dec 6 ............. 8:40-9:30pm Resident: $72/N-Resident: $74 Capoeira Capoeira, a Brazilian Martial Art, is an athletic fi ght-dance of kicks, sweeps, and acrobatic movement, played to the rhythms of traditional instruments and song; a 400 year cultural heritage that emerged from Afro-Brazilian slaves ignited by resistance, rebellion, solidarity, and survival. Capoeiristas train to evade kicks rather than block, contact is minimized, which contributes to the beautiful and poetic fl ow of a modern-day game. Heighten body awareness, improve balance, coordination, fl exibility, and strength. Enjoy a great workout and playful group camaraderie. All ability levels welcome. Class focus will be on increasing core fi tness, and agility through basic Capoeira movement. Come play! Bring a water bottle, wear non-restrictive clothing, no shorts. Bare feet. Participants are invited to arrive 15 minutes early, at 5:00pm, for a beginner's introduction to Capoeira, or individualized tips on tackling moves. Instructor: Dyonne Davidson MW ........... Ongoing ...................... 5:00-6:15pm Brazilian JIU-JITSU Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu provides the tools and disposition to defend yourself from a larger and more athletic opponent. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling martial art with no emphasis on strikes such as elbows or kicks; instead, the focus is placed on distance management, clinching, and taking the fi ght to the ground. Brazilian Jiu- Jitsu emphasizes timing, technique, and leverage to conserve energy and overcome strength and size. The class will get your heart rate up and teach you striking skills! Instructor: Nick Cruz Foundation: MW ...........Ongoing ...................... 6:30-7:30pm Intermediate: MW ...........Ongoing ...................... 7:30-8:30pm Aikido Aikido is a non-competitive Japanese martial art of defense that emphasizes a non- aggressive relationship with the attacker. The movement in Aikido is fl uid, fl exible and balanced. The goal of an aikidoka is to be conscious of his or her body, mind and spirit while being in harmony with self and surroundings. Instructor: Robert Ferguson TuTh .........Ongoing ...................... 5:00-6:15pm Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu This class runs simultaneously to the adult class, so space is limited. Class will consist of a combination of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals and a verbal and grappling game plan to address bullying without punches or kicks.
