Vic Elford drives the 917 at Le Mans, 1970.
Seventies, several 908/03s were adapted to Porsche's 2.1 liter turbo
motor. These cars remained competitive in endurance racing all
the way into the early Eighties. As late as 1980, Rolf Stommelen
and Jurgen Barth won the 1000 KM race at the Nurburgring in
a 908/03 Turbo. Sadly, in 1981, Herbert Muller was killed in a
908/03 at the Nurburgring, while Jochen Mass and Reinhold Joest
finished second in that race in another 908/03. A 908/03 also
finished second at the Kyalami 9 Hour race in 1981, behind an
also-aging 936. The amazing longevity of the 908 could be the
subject for a future article, so stay tuned.
We hope to have a big group of folks come out to hear one of
the greatest exponents of the 908, Vic Elford, speak on October 28th.
