NOVEMBER 2017 52 combination of art, technology, physics, passion, and hard work to bring the stunning lineup of Porsches to life in the Forza franchise, including accurate aerodynamics; acceleration and performance that match the torque and horsepower characteristics of each Porsche motor; their unique sound; and their overall drive feel. For many of the Porsches in the Forza Horizon 3 Porsche expansion pack, Turn 10 started with Porsche's own CAD (Computer Aided Design) data. These 3-dimensional blueprints of each car are used by Porsche to virtually test prototype production cars through computer simulations like aerodynamics, to determine manufacturing feasibility before moving to full-scale production. Having these 3D blueprints helped Turn 10 accelerate the process of creating the virtual Porsches in Forza games. But what about those classics like the 1960 Porsche 718 RS60, which were built before computer-aided design was even available? The Turn 10 team, with the help of Porsche AG in Stuttgart and Porsche Cars North America in Atlanta, had to track down real vintage vehicles for all of those Porsches that pre-dated CAD design. Then using laser 3D photography, laser scanning, and specialized software, Turn 10 recorded the shape of each classic car to create outputs that their artists could develop into the in- game cars. Accuracy, and the ultimate graphical fidelity that would emerge in the game, were of paramount importance. Hundreds of individual data points per model were used for each car, ranging from horsepower and weight, to brake rotor thickness and the exact positions of suspension mounts. Turn 10 collected this data and then processed it into a basic model. Once the mathematically perfect interpretation of each car was complete, the refinement continued. Each car's unique behavior, shape, surface types and finishes including leather, glass and paint were simulated, with the goal of utmost realism in the game. As every Porsche driver knows, the sound of a Porsche engine lights up your heart and brings a smile to your face. The Turn 10 team understands this feeling, so to fully recreate the sound of each Porsche in Forza games they went to painstaking lengths. Turn 10 recorded each car's engine using a multitude of microphones. A full load was applied to each car to properly capture and reproduce the way its engine, intake system, exhaust system, transmission and turbochargers would sound under different driving conditions, like accelerating, decelerating, steady driving, full load, and partial load. Recording each car took several hours to complete, and the time it took was well worth it. Each Porsche in the expansion pack sounds and reacts just like the real thing. Porsche's practice of continual refinement means that each Porsche model is remarkably distinct from its predecessor, with real optimizations year-to-year.
