BY MICHAELA GORMLEY CAPITAL BENEFIT SERVICES Health Care Corner Getting to Know Your Health Insurance Benefits A s we settle into 2018 and get ready for spring, now is the perfect time to ask questions and make sure you understand your insurance benefits plan. Educating yourself and your employees on how your insurance plan works is vital to getting the most out of your benefits. Plus, with the constantly shifting health care world, it is important to understand how your benefits have or have not changed this year. You can't assume it's the way it was, and that means making sure you understand what your current plan offers right now. UNDERSTAND WHAT'S COVERED AND WHAT'S NOT. Start by taking basic steps. Learning what your copay and deductible are and what's covered 100 percent as preventive (and what's not) will help tremendously as the year goes on. As of January, some insurance carriers no longer offer individual policies and many that remain offer benefits with a "narrow network." This means that if you see a health care provider outside of your primary provider's network, you might be paying much more for your visit. Most carriers provide online directories of the providers in their network, so a quick internet search might be all you need to save yourself a surprise on your bill. KNOW WHERE TO GET PRESCRIPTIONS FILLED AT THE LOWEST COST. Another thing to keep an eye on this year is changes in your pharmacy benefits. Making sure to fill your prescriptions at a preferred pharmacy can help save you money every month. Many plans also offer services to fill your prescriptions by mail. These often allow you to fill your prescription for three months at a time for a lower cost. Plus, you get the added benefit of medications delivered right to your door. Educating yourself and your employees on how your insurance plan works is vital to getting the most out of your benefits.
