FEATURE STORY 42 Spiel – September 2021 O utside of the tropics, autumn marks the transition from summer to winter. In the Pacific Northwest, it's more like the transition from the warm rainy season to the cold rainy season. The days grow shorter, the shadows longer, and there is a crispness in the air that feels refreshing and inviting. As motoring enthusiasts, we begin to think about mothballing our chariots for their long winter sleep as the driving season comes to a close. Autumn, however, also ushers in a brief but pleasant period to get out on the less crowded back roads and take in the changing colors of the foliage, the roadside farm stands with their seasonal offerings, and maybe even savor that long- awaited pumpkin-spice latte. With those thoughts in mind, I wanted to share with you one of my favorite fall drives: The North Cascades Scenic Highway. I hope you will take advantage of enjoying this drive in September or October as we witness the first frost on the pumpkins and the first dusting of snow on the high FALL DRIVE North Cascades Scenic Byway Story and Photographs by Martin Wild
