50 Spiel – September 2021 RHYS' RAMBLES A ll good things must come to an end. And I was nervous for that change to happen. My greatest concern was that I would not be ready when the time came to take that leap of faith in myself and my car. The month leading up to my first Driver Education day went by quickly, and in hindsight, there are things I would have done differently. If you have never been to a Driver Education day, the formatting is simple. For the very novice driver, like myself, step one is to sign up. It was daunting to get my head around this. I believe that many, if not most Porsche owners, get asked if they track their car somewhere along the way, and I was no different. My standard line was, "I do not own any race cars," and I would leave it at that. If I had no race cars, then the point was moot. Over this past year, I have tried to grow myself as a driver, and late last year, I declared that this would be my year to get out to a track. First, I went to a couple of the Skills Days which are held quite often and allow you to get more comfortable with your car. I have been daily-driving a Porsche for many years, but after spending a day practicing specific skills on repeat, I can say not only did I have a great time, but I became a much better driver with more confidence. From there, signing up for the Driver Education day was as easy as it had been for the Skills Day. Except that Just sign up. Rhys finally goes to the track!
