BY ASHLEY CHRIST EDUCATION SPECIALIST MBAKS I n the fall issue of Master Builder, I shared with you that our education program is developing fresh ideas and innovative programs while we adjust to the new normal. As our event policy has continuously changed in response to COVID-19, we've often asked ourselves how we can promote learning outside the classroom. Starting in 2022, we are offering a new book club for our members in hopes of addressing that very question. There are many benefits to participating in a book club. Here are some of my favorites: 1. Reading is essential for leadership development, and it helps deepen your understanding of new content. This holds especially true when meeting in a safe space with a diverse group of people who are comfortable sharing opinions and thoughts. 2. Book clubs make it easier to commit to consistent reading habits. When you share a goal with others to read more and discuss what you've learned, you remain committed to your educational objectives while also growing your network. 3. They create opportunities to forge new relationships. It's my humble opinion that learning is better when you experience it with others. A book club gives participants the opportunity to embrace new professional relationships and friendships. 4. They're a unique way to improve communication skills. Book clubs provide a one-of-a-kind setting to learn how to converse more constructively with others, whether through friendly debate or intentional sharing. Our book club aims to do two things: create a new path to education and provide opportunities to forge new professional relationships across MBAKS. Members will join a group of 6–8 people (either in person or virtually) to discuss a shared reading once a month. Book selections will rotate on a monthly basis and will cover topics that are most relevant to our industry and professional development. Our hope is that you can read and learn at your own pace, invest in your professional development, and make new friends. We would also love to hear your thoughts and suggestions for books you'd like to read! If you are interested in participating in a book club group, please contact education@mbaks.com. I hope you will join us! Building With Books Create your own professional future.
