A Force of Nature Remembering Sandy McAdams MBAKS Past President Sandy McAdams passed away on December 28, 2021, at her home in Colfax, Washington. Sandy was a legendary, trailblazing member, and the association's first woman president. Sandy put all her energy into promoting membership and was so effective that she won the MBA's first Life Spike Award for recruiting 350 new members. W hen she started at the Master Builders Association (MBA) in the early 1980s, Sandy found very few women in the association, and they were all concentrated in the Remodelers Council. Her arrival would soon change that. A natural leader with a talent for shaking things up, Sandy helped transform the once male-dominated association into one where women mattered. In a 2009 interview, she recalled, "At the time I joined [the MBA] was very much a 'good old boys' association. There were a lot of men who didn't really see the value of women being involved." But Sandy was not the type to be content with the status quo. Along with her friends and colleagues Donna Shirey, Joy Brand, Pat Tenhulzen, Shirley Blayden, and Theresa Santerre, she established an all-woman business network within the association that came to be called The Force. The Force served as a support network for women in construction in the days before Professional Women in Building (PWB), meeting for lunch once The Force. Sandy said of The Force, "We all had ambition for the association, and we all had lots of ideas and weren't afraid to roll up our sleeves and make things happen…That was the beginning of my understanding of what this association could be for me." Using the springboard of the Remodelers Council, The Force hosted several events and was instrumental in launching the REX/T-REX Awards and Rampathon.
