Becoming the Change BY SONJA O'CLAIRE BUILT GREEN PROGRAM MANAGER MBAKS T hese past few years have been filled with crises, industry changes, and unpredictable events that have created challenges for many homebuilders. Builders have had to learn to adapt to ever-increasing material costs and supply chain delays and to develop strategies to recruit and retain a rapidly evolving workforce. Change is a constant force in the green building industry as technology, codes, workforces, market trends, and climate change demand builders adapt to new realities and ways of doing business. A good first step is to stop reacting, embrace change, and capture the benefits it could bring. A more resilient step is to view the change as a positive opportunity, become the change, and lead others by example. Our community is filled with change leaders, and we look forward to sharing their positive experiences and outcomes from their leadership. Starting off the day at the 2022 Built Green Conference will be our keynote speaker Vishaan Chakrabarti, Founder and Creative Director of Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU). At PAU, he leads the firm's growing global portfolio of cultural, institutional, and public projects. In 2013 Chakrabarti authored the highly acclaimed book "A Country of Cities: A Manifesto for an Urban America." Vishaan lectures internationally and has appeared on CBS Evening News, National Public Radio, and other national television and radio programs. More recently, he has also been a featured speaker at multiple TED Talks, including TED Connects 2020: Build Back Better and 2021 TEDx: Countdown. He focuses on designing cities to be sustainable, equitable, and joyous. His keynote address will share a vision of how we can positively change our communities to lead rather than react. To facilitate robust conversations, the conference will feature four tracks for breakout sessions: ADVANCING POLICY Policies and programs that support builders and cities to meet climate imperative goals while addressing the housing crisis DEVELOPING YOUR WORKFORCE How to attract, retain, and grow your future workforce DECARBONIZING CONSTRUCTION Science and data-driven technical knowledge to design and build homes that reduce embodied and operational carbon RETHINKING MATERIALS Exploring the use of innovative, nontraditional, and salvaged low-carbon materials for the homes of the future We cannot wait to see you all and share leading ideas and best practices on September 15 at South Seattle College!
