6 Spiel – ISSUE 01 2023 FROM THE PRESIDENT KEVIN NOUWENS President president@pnwr.org Welcome to 2023! A nd welcome to the first issue of Spiel with its new, bimonthly publication schedule. Expect to see new issues around the beginning of every other month, starting in February. Also expect to see additional digital communications designed to keep you informed of and up to date with the goings on of PNWR. Sydney Tanner has done an excellent job with the monthly "In The Know" email we have received recently. We intend to expand on that effort in the coming months, which has created an opportunity. We are looking for someone to fill a new volunteer communications role. If you are interested and preferably have communications experience, let me know! It is hard to believe another year has come and gone. 2022 was perhaps the most active in all my years with PNWR. From Autocross to Tours, every program held more events than ever, all of which were very well-attended, if not sold out. As we say: PCA is about the people. The quantity and quality of events in 2022 is a testament to that – from the volunteers who organized, planned, or assisted in every event to every member who attended. Speaking of people, the new year brought several changes to our board and committee chair positions. Doug Andreassen, after serving as President for the past four years, has transitioned to the role of Past-President. Doug led PNWR through some interesting times, yet his legacy to the club will be the impacts of his dedicated and visionary leadership. Thank you, Doug, for your service. You left some big shoes to fill. We also must thank Martin Wild for his four years serving as Director-at-Large. Both will continue contributing to Spiel, and I'm sure we will find various other ways to keep them involved. Steve Downing decided that 20 years was long enough to serve as Safety Chair. Certainly no one will fill this role like Steve did, but he found a very capable and qualified replacement in Mark Grace. Mark is already familiar with quite a lot about this job from his years serving as the Driver Education tech lead. Thank you, Steve, for your decades of service, and Mark, for taking on this important role. Jeff Waibel, who many of you know from his role as Social Co-chair with his wife, Shari, has stepped up to join the board as Director-at-Large. And last but not least, Gary Barklind was kind enough to retire last year in order to free up enough time to rejoin the board as Vice President. Gary previously served as Director-at-Large, and many of you will know him from his tour leadership and social event organization in the northern reaches of the region. You might also recognize his hippie-liveried Cayman that has graced the cover of Spiel several times and which can often be found chasing people down on the track. 2023 kicked off with the first Annual PNWR Celebration Dinner since 2020, held on January 21 at the Tulalip Resorct Casino. Billy and Julie Schott did an amazing job organizing a wonderful evening, which featured a tribute to Roger Jobs for his long- time membership, commitment, and support of PNWR. A big thank you goes to Billy and Julie, along with Wendy Gulick for introducing Porsche Bellingham and Roger, and to Jay Gillotti for serving as the night's MC. And let us not forget a big thank you to Roger Jobs, Travis Graddon, and everyone else at Porsche Bellingham for being a big part of and for sponsoring the evening. Looking ahead, 2023 already has over 100 events on the calendar. Winter tours have already begun, along with Driver Skills, History, Social, and TechEd events. As the days get longer, warmer, and hopefully dryer, look forward to getting back to the track for Autocross and Driver's Ed and to polishing up your cars for upcoming Concours. As always, check the calendar at pnwr.org for the latest updates and details. I look forward to seeing you down the road. Follow us on Instagram @pca_pnwr.
