Tell Me 'BouT The Good ol' days Jim Bell 25 Years Ago PNWR President, Jack Keyes congratulated all the members who took part in the June Blind Rally and thanked Interlake Porsche/Audi for their sponsorship of the event and added "Special thanks must go to our sightless friends who allowed us to share a little of our time and fun machines so that we could all come out winners". Autocross winners from the June event included Kevin Paddock, Steve and Lisa Tweit, Leeds Gulick, Jeff Barstow, Chuck Vaden, Terry Davis, Larry Kirkbride, McNamara (no first name), Lisa Wintler, Susan Hagaman, Jim Manenica and Daryl Shuey. Al's tech notes covered preparation for summer driving and included such topics as the proper oil viscosity to use, checks of the cooling systems for both water and air-cooled engines, A/C and fuel systems as well as the items we always check in normal driving (tire pressures, oil level, etc.). Along with this, he includes a HUGE list of spare parts and tools to bring along with your luggage (if you can find a place to stow it all). With all the stuff packed in the car one could conceivably rebuild an engine along the roadside if needed. Pano listed the results of the LeMans 24 Hours with Porsches taking nine out of the first ten places. The event was won by the Holbert/Bell/Stuck Rothmans 962C and also found the 961, the racing version of the Group B 959 making its racing debut and finishing a stunning seventh overall. The race was not without tragedy as Austrian star, Jo Gartner was killed early Sunday morning when his Kremer 962C lost control at the start of the Mulsanne straight, flipped and burned. A list of the states that have passed mandatory seat belt legislation was included and showed 23 of the 50 states have enacted the law and the Jones's, father and son, shared some of their secrets from the Warbonnet tech session on preservation and protection of your Porsche. Also 32 July 2011 included was the first victory scored by a 904 (the Lake Underwood/Briggs Cunningham example winning the GT Prototype 7-10 class victory at Sebring) and the PCA nominating committee announced the slate of officers for the 1987-88 term with Dennis Thovson, Mike Springer, Drayton James and Burt Misevic nominated for President, VP. Secretary and Treasurer respectively. 20 Years Ago A tour to the Pt. Defiance zoo and an autocross were both covered in the July Spiel with 40 members showing up at the zoo with a quiz held answering questions about the zoo and aquarium. First prize, a Burago 1/18 scale 356, donated by Phil Lampman was won by Brandon Barstow in a drawing since all the entrants did so well on the quiz that it was impossible to select an outright winner. Class winners at the April 20th autocross were Dave Gaddis, Pam Nugent, Bob and Sylvia Abbott, Tom Lloyd, Ronn Wheeler, Ken Richins, Patrick Ma, Susan Hagaman, Leeds Gulick and Debbie Starret. Top time of the day was won by Leeds with a 57.556 run. Richins and Hagaman were 2nd and 3rd, .011 second apart. Results of the June 2nd concours, held at the Totem Lake Shopping Center were also published with Mike Piccolo, Skip Kratzer, Al Caldwell, Mike Deitch, Nick DeScala, Bill Bjorn and Nick Bailey all winning their Divisions in Top Only and Vic Williams, Richard Breen, Wally Calkins, John Caldwell, Kathy Ridderbusch, Rick Hook and Milt Schullian doing the same in Full. The weather at this event was described as "teeth chattering". Pat Hillyer furnished another rant about the condition of the American auto industry and Wally Calkins covered another phase of concour prep . . . this one describing tires, wheels, wheelwells, undercarriage and engine prep. Mr. Caldwell's tech notes detailed the proper methods for jacking up the various Porsche models from 356 to 928 in order to accomplish work or cleaning on the underbody, complete with drawings of each model showing the lower surface features including jack points, and one of the new members listed in "Willkommen" is the current PNWR President, Bill Bauer who at that time was driving a red '89 944 Turbo. Pano featured a profile on Vic Elford who was called "the king of unspecialized drivers". He could easily adapt to the different disciplines of the sport and was equally at home driving a rally car sideways through the woods at 100 miles an hour or guide a skitterish 917 langheck down the Mulsanne straight at LeMans at 240 mph without the slightest discomfort. He has driven everything from a '68 911T in the Monte Carlo Rally (which he won) to the above mentioned 917, to Don Nichols' Shadow Can-Am car to the Trans-Am Camaro of Jim Hall. He retired from racing after winning the 1973 Hockenheim Interserie race in the 917/30-001 prototype. Kim Crumb began a series on converting a 928 into a dual street and track machine without giving up the big Porsche's grand touring superiority and as of July 1991, PCA showed a membership of over 28,000 active members.
