ConCours Corner Dennis RooD Roo The alarm goes off at 4:45 am and you awaken, startled and wonder, once again, what you are doing getting up at this unbelievably early hour? You jump out of bed, do your exercises, perform your daily ablutions, shower and dress aiming to leave at 6:00 am. You make it out of the driveway at 6:05 am thinking, not too bad. You drive 35 miles to meet up with a bunch of people from the Arizona Porsche Club at Ray Road and Highway 10 for the drive to Tubac for a mega-car show. Upon arriving (in the dark) there is no one at the 5 & Diner Restaurant from anywhere and the note on the door says it closed 2 days earlier. Finally Steve Sapareto, Past President, arrives in his 964 Cabriolet. Then another Steve arrives, who is not going on the drive but came to say hi to everyone. Keith, Karen and their 3 year old son Collin arrive in their very nicely turned out 2007 silver 997 Turbo. Finally Mike and Cynthia arrive in their red Boxster and we are off for Tubac, 30 miles South of Tucson, close to the Mexico border. After our stop 30 miles down the road at a Burger King with a lot of Porsche posters, we drive spiritedly down highway 10 another 111 miles to Tubac. Upon arrival at the Tubac Golf and Country Club (the movie "Tin Cup" with Kevin Costner was filmed Club Event 16 March 2011 here) we drive our Lexus sedan to the parking lot as we will not be displaying this car today. The others on the tour go into the display area. Turns out that this area of Green Valley, Tubac, Casa Grande and other villages South of Tucson have a large population of retired people, many of whom have classic cars. There were 425 cars on the field that day with proceeds going to charity. After walking the field we toured Tubac, a small artist colony, and then returned to Phoenix via the San Xavier Del Bac mission church and the Pima Air and Space Museum of 300 antique and military airplanes. If you get down this way you should see these places. The weekend before we had arrived in Phoenix in time to attend the Barrett Jackson Auction. Our own Tom Pritchett, DE Chairman, attended for most of the week and bought a very nicely turned out 1931 Red Ford Vicky 2-door with matching Coca Cola trailer, which he drove home non-stop for 26 hours. I was able to help Tom and Pam a little on Monday morning after the event, playing driver to various shops to get the "fried alternator" replaced and get Pam on her plane home to get back to their children. All in all a good time and what are Porsche friends for but to help.
