ConCours Corner Dennis RooD Roo I don't know about you, but I have been infatuated with cars since I was a small child. My father was in the retail car business and worked for different dealers as a service manager, sales manager and general manager in the Midwest and here on the West Coast. I heard a lot of "car stories" around the dinner table while growing up. I have a picture of my first ride in a black 356 cabriolet at the age of 13 when I lived in Northern Indiana. I also built the plastic model kits from the time I Kelly on Collectibles - Introduction was young and still have many of them. That being said, while not a real collector of rare and valuable models, I have accumulated about 100 over time, and a high number of them are Porsches. I still buy some from time to time but have never attended any of the model, literature and memorabilia meets. There is always a display at the PCA Parade and at other car shows around the country. I have some old by: Prescott Kelly Tuesday, March 24, 2009 In this section we will overview many different examples of Porsche collectibles, including factory and distributor sales literature, factory racing victory and showroom posters, factory gifts and memorabilia, technical literature, and historically significant non-factory artifacts, importantly to include PCA memorabilia. I started collecting Porsche memorabilia in 1974. The essence of being a "collector" by blood type is that once you taste the goodies, you want them all. So it was that over 35 years I assembled very accomplished collections of sales literature, racing victory and showroom posters, factory memorabilia, and a minor collection of Porsche tin toys and 1/43rd scale models. Over the last ten years, I have authored a regular feature in the 356 Registry magazine on 356 We are planning a pretty full slate for 2011 Concours activities which I outlined in my last column. One new event may be a day in August at Bob McDowell's estate on San Juan Island where we will have national and local experts on collecting, restoring and presenting classic 356 and early 911 and other ads and brochures on some cars that are fun to own. It can be very enjoyable and inexpensive to collect the models rather than the real thing for most of us. PCA Past President Prescott Kelly is the Collectibles Chairman for PCA and has the following to say about the hobby. If you have a question or interest in this give Prescott a call or email with your questions. The following is an excerpt from our PCA web site. collectibles, which we will draw on heavily here. Starting in 1984, three very close friends in the hobby, Jim Perrin (PCA President in the 1980s, Columbus OH), Wayne Callaway (Pasadena, CA), and myself (Weston, CT) have co-chaired the Porsche Literature, Toy and Memorabilia Show and Swap Meet - first in Chicago and now in Los Angeles for the last 23 years. Indicative of the growth in interest in such material: our first meet drew fewer than 20 tables and 50 people; the 26th annual installment this past March 7th, 2009 drew well over 200 tables and over 1,000 people. For those of us that care about it, the literature and memorabilia surrounding our favorite marque adds a lot of fun to our hobby. We hope you will enjoy these articles on it. Please fell free to email me with questions or suggestions to CollectiblesEditor@pca.org. model Porsches so look for that. Prescott Kelly will be there to speak and national Concours Chairman John Takehara has indicated he will also try and be there. It will be RSVP and limited to capacity of the site. The other day I thought about our membership in PCA and PNWR over the past 27 years and, in addition to the fun events and driving experiences we have had, we really appreciate so many friends we have made in the club during that time. These are the people who team with us to put on socials, concours, tours and other events all year. I see many at multiple events during the year. Some I get together with more often outside of specific club activities for lunch, dinner, a boat ride or weekend away. These people have become some of our very best friends and we are very thankful for PCA/PNWR providing an environment in which to meet such great people. Happy New Year and I look forward to a lot more fun with our Porsches and the wonderful people who own them in 2011. 16 January 2011
