Tech ed: Porsche hybrid @ barrier Article By Dennis FleischmAn, Photos By Dennis FleischmAn & Brent Jones Ah! I love the new car smell in the morning, which was the case Saturday at Barrier Porsche. Some 50 plus PNWR members were present to experience Porsche's latest Cayenne S hybrid. As usual, besides the star of the show, Barrier had nicely optioned models of 911s, Boxsters, Caymans, and Panameras to also dream over. After we had our fill of coffee, pastries, and bagels, the staff at Barrier presented the technical aspects of the hybrid system with supporting poster boards placed around the vehicle. The hybrid can operate in any one of six modes, one of which is a Coasting Mode where the combustion engine and electrical drive shut down and the Cayenne hybrid coasts or freewheels down hills. The combustion engine is a 3.0 (Above) Mark Dennie and Jack Esposito (seated) test fit the Hybrid, (Left) Cayenne hybrid. liter supercharged V6 and the Cayenne S hybrid weighs 388 lbs more than the 2011 Cayenne S. Towing capacity is listed as 7700 lbs. SUNMARK 800 118th Ave NE Bellevue, WA 98005 It was interesting to learn about the changes in service and maintenance procedures due to hybrid technology. For example, the high battery voltage and current necessitate the electrical system be disabled before service work can begin due to electrical shock hazards. The vehicle requires a special battery charger if that is ever needed. Although I did not test drive the hybrid, sitting in the driver's seat felt quit comfy with everything in the right spot.
