25 Connections Summer 2016 Each day, Crowley's Tucker Gilliam works to orchestrate the myriad of construction projects associated with the company's more than half-a-billion- dollar investment that will transform Crowley's shipping services between the U.S. mainland and Puerto Rico to an unrivaled level of performance and efficiency. Crowley's investment is the largest in the history of the trade, and has many moving parts, highlighted by: • Construction of two new Commitment Class ConRo (combination container and Roll/On-Roll/Off) ships — El Coquí and Taíno — which will be among the first of their kind in the world to use LNG for fuel. • Construction of a new 900-foot-long, 114-foot-wide concrete pier at Crowley's Isla Grande terminal in San Juan. • Purchase of three new ship-to-shore gantry cranes for use at the terminal. • Dredging of 410,000 cubic yards of material for a new channel approaching the new pier and turning basin. • A new seven-lane exit gate and revamped entry gate, coupled with supporting hardware and software for a new terminal operating system that will expedite cargo pickup and delivery. • Installation of 140 new power plugs for refrigerated "reefer" containers at the terminal • Extensive paving and reinforcement of the container terminal. As vice president of special projects Gilliam oversees all of it, along with the construction and design teams responsible for building Crowley's future in the trade. Sweating the details is part of the job – from the depth of pile driving this summer for the new concrete pier at Isla Grande, to the layout of the stateroom for the captain aboard El Coquí – nothing is overlooked.
