FEBRUARY 2017 48 Ferrari 250 GTO. Photo provided by bornrich.com Condition 4 At this level the car is in average, presentable condition and operates as a good driver. Everything should be in working order, minor oil leaks or other small mechanical issues could be present. Paint quality could be mixed, some original, some repaint, rock chips normal for mileage. Some parts are no longer original or the car has other modifications or mild customization. Interior would show age/use/wear with some damaged areas (such as the dreaded cracked dashboard). Engine compartment serviceable but not detailed. A number 4 car may look great from 10 feet away and polish up nicely. Many high or ultra-high mileage cars that have been well maintained could fall in this category. Condition 5 At condition 5, the car is still a runner, similar to condition 4 but with larger cosmetic or mechanical problems. Or, it could be a condition 4 car with a major mechanical problem such as a blown engine or needing a transmission/clutch rebuild. As a runner, the 5 might have major paint problems and/or severe interior condition problems. Certain rare or very old cars at condition 5 might still be maintained as "preservation" examples (sorted mechanically, cleaned, but not restored). See below the "Seinfeld" Speedster discussion. Condition 6 There is a point where most cars are at the fork in the road. The choice at condition 6 is between major repairs/complete restoration or being parted-out and scrapped. It could be a personal choice or a value-driven decision. If the car is rare or otherwise highly desirable, restoration might be easily justified. Let's say the car is a non-running 911 SC with major cosmetic issues or significant damage. It's not terribly likely that a restoration would make sense (at least not financially speaking). If the same car is a 2.7 RS, or a 356 Speedster, the owner might very well take the restoration route. At condition 6, "preservation" is probably not an option unless it will be a static display. Condition 7 Condition 7 would be a car in extremely poor condition both cosmetically and mechanically, but still somewhat intact. If restoration is feasible, the car would need nearly everything to be done. Likely the damage or other issues would call for scrapping the car unless it is extraordinarily rare and collectible. An example could be the Ferrari 250 GTO (3589GT) that sat in a farm field for some 15 years before being rescued. The basic shell and chassis were there with some parts, but the restoration required entirely Porsche 911s line up at Porsche Day Exotics. Porsche Speedster from Whistler Concours.
