A s the oldest and largest homebuilders association in the NAHB federation, MBAKS takes pride in building communities—not just the homes we live in, but the social connections that bind us together MBAKS offers three major programs that leverage volunteer time and member resources to positively impact the lives of underserved people in our communities volunteers donated 840 hours to paint 35,000 square feet for Compass Housing As of 2018, MBAKS' scholarship programs have awarded $135,000 to students in universities, colleges, and programs across Washington studying woodworking and cabinetry; finish work; general construction; electrical, plumbing, and heating; architecture and design; and construction management We are proud to provide this critical resource to foster the next generation of trades professionals Rampathon improves safety, independence, and peace of mind for our neighbors in need through ADA-compliant accessibility ramps The ramps, built by MBAKS member volunteers, significantly improve quality of life for ramp recipients and their families Since 1993, 5,000 volunteers have come together to build nearly 550 ramps, including 562 volunteers, 34 teams, and 38 ramps in 2019 alone Read more on page 46 Get involved or partner with us at mbaks.com/giving-back MBAKS Community Stewardship Programs and Partnerships Building Communities Since 2003, Painting a Better Tomorrow has helped more than a dozen local service organizations refresh their facilities with a fresh coat of paint That may seem superficial, but a clean, inviting environment can bolster feelings of respect, value, and pride for people receiving services—an improvement too often out of financial reach for nonprofits Last year, 120 Of course, one association can't make a difference alone, so MBAKS partners with local nonprofits to increase our collective impact These partnerships include regular MBAKS member and staff team builds, sponsorships, and other financial support Our primary nonprofit partnerships include: • Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing by constructing, renovating, and preserving homes • Housing Hope provides housing, job training, education and employment counseling, preschool, and other services for people experiencing homelessness in Snohomish County • Rebuilding Together Seattle helps to restore dilapidated homes for low-income homeowners • Sawhorse Revolution, a carpentry summer camp and after-school program, teaches students trades skills with an on-the-ground approach to education, empowerment, and leadership community 28 master builder master builder SUMMER 2019
