Tell Me BouT The Good ol days Jim Bell 25 Years Ago Results of the Novice Weekend that was mentioned in the February issue were published with the team of Bill Pence/Will Fohrell winning the rally, Russell Skattum and Kathy Schmidt having the top men and womens times in the autocross portion. The instructors were also given a chance to run with Ken Richins showing all how its done with a TTOD run of 38.39. 10 novice teams took part in the rally with over 50 drivers showing up for the autocross which was run at Cheney stadium. Als tech notes addressed 911 window lift mechanisms which, on the early cars had a tendency to bind up due to dirt corroding the swaged joint, and everything coming disconnected. With the introduction of power-operated windows, a new mechanism was introduced that could be retrofitted to the old handcrank system and Als article detailed how to accomplish this task on his 1969 T. The Region has been invited to show their cars at the Expo 86 Fair in Vancouver, BC and an application blank was included in the April Spiel. Entrants, as well as workers and judges would receive a free day pass to the Expo. Preparations for the 88 Parade bid continued with more of the venues being firmed up. The Tacoma Dome will be utilized for the Concours with the parking lot used for the autocross. During the 1975 Parade, a salmon bake was held at Tillicum Village on Blake Island and it was hoped that this location could be used again since it was such a gigantic hit during Parade Week. Pano covered the Miami Grand Prix, which was won by Bob Wollek and Paolo Barilla in the Bridgestone Bayside 962 which is owned by PNWR member, Bruce Leven. The race was something of a destruction derby with every one of the top ten teams tagging the walls at some time or another during the qualifying period as well as the 34 April 2011 race. Part of the challenge was dodging cars as they caromed off the walls and corners. Drake Olson, who had won the 1985 North American Porsche Cup was profiled and another article covered the 86 Paris-Dakar Rally in which the Porsche Type 961, the rally version of the 959 took the top two places with the winner being driven by Rene Metge and Dominique Lemoyne, followed by the Jacky Ickx/Claude Brasseur car. Roland Kussmaul and Hendrik Unger drove a third 961 as a high-speed support vehicle for the first two and still managed a 6th place finish. 20 Years Ago The makeup of the Board changed in April as Secretary Dave Moore had to resign due to unforeseen work commitments and was replaced by Jay Hadley. A plan to implement an annual vehicle inspection for cars that will take part in driver education events was tabled until all qualified inspection facilities could be contacted and reviewed as to their licensing and insurance coverages. Als tech notes continued with discussions of Porsche clutches this time dealing with Porsches hydraulic clutches which were first introduced on the 1977 928 and incrementally until all models used them by 1987. Along with Als inputs, a few of PCNAs tech bulletins were included one advising against chrome plating aluminum road wheels and another describing the correct method for installing a cellular phone that wont cause any weird electrical system interactions. Another article discussed the various new technologies available to law enforcement to monitor our behavior on the Nations highways and byways and the detectors that will keep us safe in the velocity wars as it were. Cincinnati Microwaves new Escort emerged the winner with a radar range rating of 100% (in this article anyway). For the first time in five years a ladies-only tech session will be held at Squires Autowerke with Squire and Chris Powell giving a general tech overview and Janet Williams, Susan Hagaman and Julie Komarow covering concours, autocross and driver education. Finally, it was noted that the 5th annual Pacific Northwest 356 bull session will be held on the Beach at Kala Point near Port Townsend on May 26th. An interesting Pano article detailed Vern Schuppans idea to build 50, airconditioned, emission-controlled 962CRs for the street which would sell for about $1.5 mil and would be just the thing for the I-5 commute as they are described as docile as a Volkswagen. Australian Schuppan is a millionaire who owns several 956 and 962 models, an Eagle F5000 car, a Mclaren M24, a Porsche 959 and a P-51 Mustang. I wonder if this project ever happened. National President, Burt Misevic discussed the finances of PCA and a couple from Rocky Mountain Region described what its like to run a 1955 356 coupe in the La Carrera Panamerica. After a few trials and tribulations, they managed to finish 10th in class and 20th overall. It was also noted that PCNA is prepared to offer Porsche owners complete restoration of all models including mechanical, engine, transmission, suspension and total body work at the PCNA facility in Reno for those who want to display their cars at concours events or otherwise want factorytrained technicians to do their work. 10 Years Ago Spiel editor, Gary Elwood, advised the Board that, due to his move to the wilds of the Olympic Peninsula, the editorship of the Spiel will be taken over by none other than J.A.Jance, the mystery writer whose stories take place in the Seattle area. Of course, we all know that her protagonist, detective J.P. Beaumont drives a Guards Red 928 and perhaps she will write a novel involving the
