Spiel – August 2021 18 FEATURE STORY O ne of the best things automotive collectors can do is to share their significant cars. Your local Cars and Coffee is one venue, however, a better opportunity to expand the automotive inspiration is to loan vehicles to museums. That's what a recent Cars Yeah podcast guest and Porsche collector Steven Harris has done. Those of us who love Porsches dream about owning any of the cars he has in his garage. Steven Harris is a New York city architect who has been collecting Porsches for decades. When Steven was an eight-year-old boy, his uncle had a 356, and he said of it: "I still remember every detail about that car, even the smell. I've never gotten over it." When Steven went off to university, his father loaned him his 1967 911S. Decades later, his successful career as an architect has afforded him to amass an incredible array of Porsches, many of which have been used in photographs of his homes and building projects. Fortunately, Steven believes that cars are meant to be driven, and drive them he does. He's participated in numerous rallies including the Great South American Challenge, Peking to Paris, the Copperstate, Colorado Grand, Mille Miglia, and many others. He looks at himself as the caretaker of these vehicles, not the owner. Restoring, preserving, and exercising them for future generations. 16 carefully selected Porsches from his impressive garages are now on display at Upstate New York's Saratoga Automobile Museum where he sits on their board of directors. All of these cars are very rare, air-cooled street cars. The exhibit is titled "Rare Air," and, to list just a few, it includes: a 1994 911 964 Carrera RS 3.8, 1973 911 Carrera RS, 1957 356A 1500 GT/ GT Carrera Speedster, 1959 Carrera GS Cabriolet, 1973 911T "Shatang" hotrod, and a 1959 356 Carrera GT Coupe. The exhibit runs through Labor Day at the museum in Saratoga Springs, New York. Following the exhibit, the museum will host another show featuring cars from his collection under a different theme that will be special RS models. Famed photographer James Lipman has photographed most of Steven's Porsches and will be producing large-scale photographs and an illustrated catalog. Says Steven, "I love architecture and automobiles, and being able to combine these passions is a treat." You can see his work on his website at: stevenharrisarchitects.com. You may listen to all the Cars Yeah shows on the Cars Yeah website at carsyeah.com or on any mobile podcast app by searching "Cars Yeah podcast."
