This is an easy fix even out on the road, but does require removal of your luggage from the front compartment. Until you can get a replacement relay (911.615.103.01), you need to remember to turn off the air conditioner when you park the car and turn off the engine. A check of several 911 wiring diagrams from 1976 through 1987 indicated they all use a similar setup, so it may still may apply to a lot of cars out there. Figure 2. Air conditioner wiring (rear condenser only) FRONT LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT CONDENSERS For factory 911 air conditioners with front condensers (build dates after December 1977), condition and operation of the front condenser fan in the forward luggage compartment should also be checked. This fan assembly which expels heat from the front condenser and is shown in Figure 3, is supposed to operate every time the magnetic clutch on the compressor is engaged. The fan is needed to get the required temperature drop in the condenser, especially under hot running conditions. Questions received from several owners who had just purchased a car with this arrangement indicated that the motor brushes burned out in the motor, and the fan was inoperative. It may be difficult, if not impossible, to hear the fan under normal driving conditions, so it should be checked when the air conditioner is serviced.
