Rennsport Reunion IV and 917 Report Article & Photos by Jay Gillotti Its unusual for a writer to run out of superlatives, but RRIV was so good that its really hard to describe. Having been to the first one at Lime Rock in 2001, which was an amazing event, its difficult to summarize just how much bigger and better this event was. PCNA involvement (and dollars) certainly didnt hurt anything. Laguna Seca is a great facility and this has been proven year after year by the Monterey Historic Races (now Motorsports Reunion). California in October is gorgeous and oh by the way, there were only 400 or so racing Porsches to look over! PCA also did a great job organizing presentations and Q&A with panels of distinguished Porsche drivers (on Cayman Island!). The engineers panel on Sunday was quite entertaining with Walter Naher (author of the 917 Archiv), Valentin Schaefer, Alwin Springer and Norbert Singer. Seeing a member of the Porsche family (Wolfgang) speak was a rare treat, alongside PCNA CEO Detlev von Platen. The introduction of the 7th generation 911 to North America was another once-in-a-lifetime deal. And yes, there was lots of discussion about the project number (991) and how Porsche is running out of numbers between 901 and 999. The PCA corrals by themselves would have been a tremendously good car show. As to the 917 report, there were 10 of my favorite cars on hand, down a bit from 17 or so that were at RRIII, which I stupidly missed. Chassis 015, now owned by Bruce Canepa, was restored to 917K configuration and Gulf colors early in the last decade. It appears as it did when it won Daytona in 1970 (roof window and all). It was pretty neat to see 015 and 016 parked next to each other under the Canapa tent (as they were 42+ years ago in the famous 917 homologation photo). 20 November 2011 Chassis 016, owned by Chris McAllister, is always a joy to see and he races it hard. This car is in very original condition and was Pedro Rodriguez favorite 917. Pedro won three races with it in 1970
