W hether you're a local or live out of state, the Puget Sound region offers a range of vacation rentals catering to every taste. Pick your dramatic vistas, unique communities or ecosystems, recreational options—hiking, boating, swimming, skiing, or exploring—and even your preferred urban experience, and there's a rental for you. Not just in Washington, but across the country. Many people know Board & Vellum. As one of the Seattle area's premier architecture and custom homebuilding companies, their eye-catching, sustainably built single-family, multifamily, and commercial spaces can be found all over Seattle. What people might not know is that Board & Vellum also quietly designs private vacation homes and rentals, bringing the same level of thoughtful design to projects most of us only see a few days at a time. Interested in knowing more about designing a vacation home, I recently spoke with Founder and Managing Principal of Board & Vellum, Jeff Pelletier, about what makes these spaces tick. The Vacation Experience Board & Vellum have designed a variety of vacation homes in sundry climates and locales—from beachfront escapes and mountain retreats to ranch properties and island life destinations to urban oases in bustling cities. Jeff says that clients come to Board & Vellum with different objectives. "Many of these properties are designed flexibly and might be used as a permanent residence [with a rental component] or primarily for rent depending on what's happening in that client's life. Often, these clients are repeat clients that we know from designing their primary homes." Despite not being well known as a vacation home designer, Board & Vellum is unusually well-suited to creating the spaces their clients want.
