Former Speaker of the House Frank Chopp announced his retirement earlier this year. Chopp brings with him many years of experience that Legislators on the Move will no doubt be missed by the Legislature. A long-time advocate for housing, his voice will be difficult to replace. Two moderate Democrats have announced campaigns for statewide office in the Senate. Senator Mark Mullet of Issaquah is running for Governor and Senator Kevin Van De Wege from the 24th District (the Olympic Peninsula) is running for Public Lands Commissioner. With many key votes in the Senate being decided by razor-thin margins, the loss of Mullet and Van De Wege could potentially be significant. Open seats are nearly always hotly contested. Whomever fills these seats could be a strong indicator of how future legislation moves.
