engine mounted transmissions. Advantages claimed for the cable shifter include less weight and volume plus reduced noise and vibration transmission into the car. The cable shifter has been used for the manual, Tiptronic and PDK transmissions with few owner problems reported. Figure 3 shows sketches of the 997 6 speed and Tiptronic transmission cables from the Porsche parts catalog (Reference 3). Lids, Latches and Heater Controls In addition to the major driving controls, Porsche has always used wire cable controls on heater controls, engine and storage lids, and gas filler flaps. Typical end fittings include small clamps with set screws on spring���loaded tabs or latches. All of these cable controls use either a fixed guide tube or a flex��� ible housing clamped at each end. The most common problems are lids that won���t close properly and keep coming open at some inopportune time like in the middle of an autocross or the occasional cable wire that breaks or comes loose from its latch. These were previously reviewed in Reference 4. The most common problem of inadvertent front trunk latch opening on 911 and 912 models is usually the result of an improperly adjusted cable attachment. In order to get the correct adjustment, 38 November 2011 Figure 3. 997 Carrera Transmission Cables (Reference 3). an awl or drift must be placed into the l/8th inch hole in the lower latch to prop the latch into the dosed condition. Once that is done, the release cable can be pulled completely tight and the cable stop reset at the tightened position to provide a good adjustment.
